Carlton's first internationally branded hotel – Crowne Plaza Melbourne Carlton – is open now, with rates starting from $249

Carlton has long been one of Melbourne’s most characterful corners – all cute espresso bars, old-school trattorias and leafy squares – and now, it’s officially checking into the big leagues. Enter Crowne Plaza Melbourne Carlton, the neighbourhood’s first internationally branded hotel, which has just opened its doors on the CBD fringe. The launch of the hotel is a notable shift for the inner-city precinct, adding a polished new stay to an area that’s traditionally leaned more local than luxe.
Set overlooking Lincoln Square, the hotel places guests right in the heart of Carlton – a suburb defined by its Italian heritage, café culture and enduring community feel. It’s also a strategic base for anyone orbiting the nearby universities, hospitals and cultural institutions, offering easy access to the city without losing that neighbourhood charm.
Design-wise, the vibe is all muted tones and organic fibres. The building’s façade takes cues from Carlton’s plane tree-lined streets, with perforated copper-bronze panels that shift with the light throughout the day. Upstairs, the 107 guest rooms lean into that same aesthetic: deep green hues, timber finishes and textured artworks that nod to the 'burb’s layered history. According to the team, the vibe is intimate and cocoon-like – a quiet retreat from Lygon Street’s buzz just around the corner. The ground floor lobby doubles as a working lounge, open for guests and locals to stop by for a laptop-and-long-black moment.
Then there’s the food. At street level, Fico Restaurant and Bar taps straight into the suburb’s Italian DNA, reworking the classic trattoria format with a contemporary edge. Helmed by executive chef Patrick Chung, the menu centres on seasonal produce and share-style dining, with handmade pasta produced daily and a line-up of crowd-pleasers like kingfish crudo and freshly shucked oysters. There’s even a bit of tableside theatre in the form of a made-to-order sgroppino – when in Rome, obvs.
Beyond leisure stays, the hotel is also angling to become a new hub for events in the area, with more than 270 square metres of flexible meeting space spread across four rooms.
Rooms are available now, with opening rates starting from $249 per night. You can learn more and book over here.
