It’s the last week of summer. Just let that sink in. After what felt like months thinking summer would never eventuate, us Melburnians managed to have a relatively normal summer (albeit with a couple of hiccups). Now’s the time to enjoy summer’s last blast – so we’ve laid out some excellent things to do in Melbourne this week, from February 22 to 28. The weather is looking… err... fine. But a couple of clouds never stopped us before!

Start making plans:

Eat

It’s your second last chance to hit up Queen Victoria Market’s weekly food truck event, Food Truck Stop. Some of Melbourne’s best food trucks will be gathering near the hallowed market sheds to sell everything from bao buns to burgers, tacos, smoked barbecue meats and mango lassis. It kicks off at 5pm and runs until 10pm. Entry is free and you can read more about it here.

Ricotta is so wonderful that the folks over at That’s Amore Cheese have announced Australia’s first-ever Ricotta Festival. The cheese lover’s dream event will be held at That’s Amore Cheese in Thomastown on Sunday, February 28 and punters (who pay $10 for a ticket) will be greeted by a ricotta vat from its factory at the entrance (yes, that means hot ricotta upon arrival). There will be live music, more food and drinks, naturally. More info and tickets here.

Drink

Gather your dogs and get ready to enjoy a day of wine and woofs at the Ascot Lot this February. The food truck park is hosting Pooches and Prosecco once again on Saturday, February 27, bringing together a stack of activities to enjoy with your dog and a glass of wine. There’s free doggy treats, pet supplies to browse, plus plenty for humans as well – including food trucks and the dedicated Prosecco bar. All the details here.

Do

The Jewish Museum of Australia is currently hosting the largest ever Mirka Mora retrospective. It’s hard to fully comprehend the impact that artist Mirka Mora had on Melbourne. The French-born artist emigrated to Melbourne in 1951 following the Holocaust and quickly set about ingraining herself and her playful art within the city’s growing bohemian scene. There have been many exhibitions on Mora, but none quite like this. The museum has turned into an “immersive Mirka-world” and features never-before-exhibited works from the Mora family and Mirka’s studio archives. More information and tickets here.

The 2021 Australian Ballet season kicks off in Melbourne with a stadium gig Summertime at the Ballet at Margaret Court Arena. Summertime fields excerpts from various hits including Lucas Jervies’ Spartacus, George Balanchine’s Pas de Deux and Themes and Variations, and Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow. “There are no sets or scene changes,” says Australian Ballet artistic director, David Hallberg. “It’s the dancers, great repertoire and the orchestra. That’s such an amazing way to boil everything down and show the talent.” It runs until Sunday and tickets start at just $46. More info here.
