When it comes to making the most of your long weekends, it pays to plan ahead

We can all agree that the summer holidays this season went by way too fast. And if you’re already planning your getaways for the year ahead, you might want to get in quick with the long weekends before the best camping sites and sexiest hotel rooms get snapped up.
To help, we’ve rounded up the public holidays in Victoria in 2026 – so you can get booking and keep holiday mode alive. Want to maximise your time off? Here’s our guide to strategically booking your annual leave for some extra-long holidays.
New Year’s Day: Thursday, January 1
Invasion/ Australia Day: Monday, January 26
Labour Day: Monday, March 9
Good Friday: Friday, April 3
Easter Saturday: Saturday, April 4
Easter Sunday: Sunday, April 5
Easter Monday: Monday, April 6
ANZAC Day: Saturday, April 25 (observed on the day; no substitute day)
King’s Birthday: Monday, June 8
Friday before the AFL Grand Final: Friday, September 25
Melbourne Cup Day: Tuesday, November 3
Christmas Day: Friday, December 25
Boxing Day: Saturday, December 26
Boxing Day (additional observed day): Monday, December 28, 2026 (because Boxing Day falls on a Saturday)
It’s worth noting that ANZAC Day in Victoria is observed on the day it falls (Saturday April 25) – no additional weekday public holiday is given when it falls on a weekend. Boohoo.
As always, Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday across most of Victoria but local/regional variations may apply in some areas.
