Victoria is renowned for many things – Melbourne's vibrant laneways, the spectacular Great Ocean Road, and the country's finest coffee and cafés. But did you know that our state also boasts some seriously awe-inspiring natural landmarks? While NSW may claim Australia's highest mountain, Victoria's own Mount Bogong stands as the state's tallest peak, an exhilarating challenge for hikers, skiers, and nature enthusiasts alike.

If you're simply curious or keen to plan a visit, here's everything you need to know about the highest mountain in our state.

Where is Mount Bogong?

Mount Bogong stands prominently within the Alpine National Park, part of the Victorian Alps and the Great Dividing Range. Located about a four-and-a-half hours drive northeast of Melbourne, the mountain rises dramatically from the picturesque town of Mount Beauty, reaching more than 1,600 metres from base to summit.

What can I do at Mount Bogong?

Adventure is at the heart of any visit to Mount Bogong. For experienced hikers and skiers, the mountain is an alpine playground, offering trails and thrilling backcountry skiing opportunities. During warmer months, hikers can tackle one of the three main routes – Staircase Spur, Eskdale Spur or Granite Flat Spur – each offering rolling views, steep ascents, and challenging terrain. In winter, seasoned skiers take to the snow-capped slopes.

How long does it take to hike Mount Bogong?

There's no sugarcoating it, Mount Bogong is steep. The popular Staircase Spur route is a challenging 16-kilometre round-trip, taking roughly six to nine hours to complete. Alternatively, the Eskdale Spur offers a slightly longer 20-kilometre round-trip and typically takes eight to eleven hours. Either way, it will be a strenuous – but incredibly rewarding – climb.

What can I see at Mount Bogong?

The summit of Mount Bogong provides unparalleled 260-degree views across Victoria's alpine landscape. Along the trails, you'll encounter wild alpine flora, towering alpine ash forests, and in spring and summer, wonderful displays of wildflowers. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot native creatures such as the mountain pygmy possum or smoky mouse. Mount Bogong is also steeped in Aboriginal culture, having been a gathering place for traditional owners who came to feast on protein-rich Bogong moths.

Where can I get to Mount Bogong from Melbourne?

The trip from Melbourne to Mount Bogong is approximately a four and a half hours drive northeast via the Hume Freeway. Once at Mount Beauty (which offers several accommodation options, from cosy cabins to lodges), head to Mountain Creek Picnic Area, the starting point for both Staircase and Eskdale Spur trails.
