Cracking news for pizza lovers: Pizza’Mare, a more relaxed offering from Sydney’s award-winning Italian restaurant a’Mare, is now open above the harbourfront venue. Led by celebrated couple Alessandro and Anna Pavoni – the duo behind OrmeggioCibaria ManlyChioscoPostino Osteria and Vineria Luisa – Pizza’Mare aims to fill a gap in the Barangaroo market for those wanting a hearty Italian feed without dropping a week’s rent, with garlic and rosemary pizzas starting from $21.

Puglia-born head pizzaiolo Paolo Lacarpia and the team are creating pizzas with biga-based Neapolitan dough. It undergoes a long fermentation process, resulting in a lighter, more digestible base, and is fired in a pizza oven brought over from Modena.

There are classic flavours, like Napoletana ($26), featuring San Marzano, yellow and cherry tomatoes, capers, oregano and extra virgin olive oil; and mortadella ($31), with smoked provola, fior di latte mozzarella, lemon zest and basil, alongside more creative offerings.

Try the yellowfin tuna crudo ($38) with confit cherry tomatoes, stracciatella, lemon zest and basil. If you want to go all out, go for the Stone Axe MS9+ Wagyu carpaccio ($52) with cherry tomato salsa, buffalo mozzarella, salsa verde and mountain black pepper. For dessert, there’s the ‘Pizza’Misù’ ($24) with Nutella, coffee, hazelnut crumble and mascarpone.

Starters include deep-fried pizza dough balls ($9), filled with mozzarella and topped with tomato, and slow-braised octopus ($32) with tomato, garlic, chilli and parsley. Plus, there’s pasta, like rigatoni cacio e pepe ($31) and spaghetti aglio e olio ($29).

The opening of Pizza’Mare marks a change at a’Mare, as the fine dining restaurant – renowned for its tableside-fresh pesto pasta and theatrical service – has undergone a playful transformation led by top Sydney designers Luchetti Krelle. There are now three offerings under the one roof: a’Mare, Pizza’Mare, and Vista’Mare, a casual bar for spritzes and snacks.

Alessandro Pavoni, founder of Maestro Hospitality, said: “Pizza’Mare brings a new energy to a’Mare. It’s more relaxed, more spontaneous. You can come in for a pizza, a pasta or a glass of wine and enjoy the harbour without it needing to be a big occasion. For us, it’s about creating a place people can return to again and again.”

Anna Pavoni adds: “Pizza’Mare is the kind of place we always felt was missing here. Barangaroo is full of people looking for a great, relaxed meal, but there really isn’t anywhere nearby for a truly great pizza. And when you combine that with one of the most beautiful harbour views in Sydney, it becomes something very special.
