April means a few things in Sydney. The end of daylight saving for another year (RIP). The Easter Show, Sydney Comedy Festival and my personal favourite thing: hot cross bun season (though, if you’re my dear old dad, that season is year-round). Whether you’re a purist and prefer yours soft and spiced, or like to change it up (hello, dulce de leche hot cross buns), we’ve rounded up Sydney’s best. Plus, we’ve included a few extra fun treats to try. The only rule? Heaps of butter on your buns. We don’t make the rules. Happy Easter.

Tuga Pastries

The pastel de nata gods don’t mess around at Easter. Case in point: this Dubai chocolate hot cross bun, which is as ridiculously delicious as it looks. Yes, you should go get one. Or several.

Cafe Margaret

Hot cross buns by star chef Neil Perry? Yes, please. These ones are soft and plump, with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, candied orange and Earl Grey tea. Fancy. Best enjoyed with lots of butter and sea salt. While you're there, try Perry's award-winning burger, too.

A.P Bakery

The team at this legendary Sydney bakery is sticking with tradition this year. Their buns feature Aussie sultanas, are fragrant with spice, and finished with a brown sugar, citrus and cinnamon glaze.

Humble Bakery

We love this bakery and their buns. Dotted with raisins, sultanas, apricots, cranberries and orange peel, plus cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger, they’re a beautiful classic, gone in seconds.

Martha's

How beautiful do these look? Choose from classic, dulce de leche, or peanut butter and jelly – or do as we do and go the lot. Either way, you’re in for a hopping good time. You'll find this lovely bakery in Wareemba.

Tuga Pastries

Yes, we've included Tuga twice but they deserve it. Why go small when you can order the Big Bun from Tuga? It’s a seven-inch hot cross bun with whipped Pepe Saya butter laced with local raw honey, topped with a spiced glaze and speckled eggs. Hell yeah. Feeds 6-8.

Shadow Baking

A hot cross bun and a scroll walk into a bar, and the rest is history. One of our fave treat-makers is pumping out hot cross scrolls (vanilla custard with dark choc or fruit) this Easter.

Baker Bleu

Purveyors of excellent sangers and bread, Baker Bleu’s sour cherry and dark chocolate hot cross bun is in our top-three buns. Think tart cherries balanced with smooth, slightly sweet choc. Heaven.

Sonoma Bakery

Making bread since 1998, these guys know their carbs. Their “not” cross bun features plump raisins, cranberries, apricots and candied orange, topped with a sweet, spiced glaze.

Deliciously Yours

Feel like going all out this Easter? Order this whopping 1.3kg chocolate egg, featuring Belgian chocolate with a Peter Rabbit scene hand-painted by founder Carol Mazzella.

Madame and Yves

A crème brûlée bun with caramelised toffee – can it get much better? Head to this top French patisserie in Clovelly and decide for yourself.

The Bread & Butter Project

These buns are special. Not only are they tasty, they’re created by refugees learning baking skills. Pick up a bag at Harris Farm in Leichhardt or Bondi Junction – all proceeds go to helping others.
