London undergoes a festive facelift in the build-up to Christmas as the city gets decked out with more LEDs than there are grains of sand in the world (okay, this might be a slight exaggeration, but there are a lot!). Whether you’re making an excursion to one of capital's many Christmas markets and fairs, planning to practise your Torville and Dean routine at one of London's many ice rinks, or are even doing a spot of shopping at one of London’s best Christmas shops, make sure you take a detour to one of the truly spectacular illuminations lighting up our city. Layer up, grab your gloves and prepare to see London at its festive best. It’s sure to be lit.
We’ll be updating this page with more events for Christmas 2019 as they are announced.

The best Christmas lights in London
You know Christmas is coming when Oxford Street is transformed by sparkly, glowing lights. This year, for the first time in six years, the lights are having a complete overhaul. Get ready to feast your peepers on 27 LED ‘light curtains’ which will be draped down the length of the street and made up of a total of 222,000 lights.
This year Carnaby Street’s Christmas lights are spotlighting (ahem) one of the pressing issues of our times. Carnaby has collaborated with ocean conservation charity Project 0 for this sustainable display. Expect dazzling underwater scenes featuring 5-metre long whale that blows bubbles, giant clusters of jellyfish and 200 illuminated vampire squid. What’s more, it’s all been made using recycled and reusable materials.
Covent Garden’s cobbled piazza and market buildings are even more irresistible at this time of year. Get ready for another huge hand-picked Christmas tree glowing with 30,000 festive lights, 115,000 lights sparkling across the Piazza and its adjoining streets and the usual big reindeer sculpture.
The grand shopping sweep gets its usual festive makeover with garlands of lights down the length of the road. See those glorious golden angels make their comeback soaring high above Regent Street.
See the botanical garden's weird and wonderful plants all lit up. Plus this year, the mile-long, twinkling trail holds some new surprises. There will be a shower of silvery vines at the Treetop Walkway while down below you'll be able to spy folkloric illuminations of mythical fairy creatures and Will-o’the Wisps.
Eccleston Yards will be putting its own spin on Christmas lights with an installation of 500 individually orbs suspended in the space for visitors to immerse themselves in. The multicoloured solar system will be shining bright by the end of November.
Seven Dials have partnered with homless charity Shelter for this year’s starry night themed Christmas installation. Londoners can visit a special charity ‘tap’ point at Earlham Street and tap their bank cards to give £3 to Shelter. The official switch on will take place Thursday November 14 from 5pm-9pm (the actual switch on moment is at 6.30pm) with an ‘immersive shopping evening’ of free festive activities and live music from the House Gospel Choir.
Each year, Syon Park’s Enchanted Woodland transforms the 600-year-old gardens with a light display, completely illuminating the Great Conservatory in the centre of the historic arboretum.
Come for the sparkle, stay for the snow and let the mulled wine flow in this vast Victorian market (better known to Harry Potter fans as ‘Diagon Alley’).
A three-hour, two-wheel trundle around the capital to see its prettiest festive illuminations. After taking in the capital's most infamous lightstravaganzas like Oxford Circus, Regent St and Seven Dials, you'll end your voyage with an atmospheric bike over the Waterloo Bridge.
