Divadlo Na zábradlí review Rate it

Founded in 1958, the Theatre on the Balustrade lay the groundwork for Czech Theatre of the Absurd. It was the focus of much secret police attention prior to 1989, when it harboured such dissidents as Václav Havel (whose works are still part of the repertoire) and New Wave film-maker Jiří Menzel. More recently, the theatre was commanded by exciting director Petr Lébl, who hanged himself in the theatre's rafters after the première of his bold Uncle Vanya; it remains in the repertoire as a memorial. Though Na zábradlí has yet to find a replacement of Lébl's calibre, the work remains strong, and the resident company of actors (Jiří Ornest, Magdaléna Sidonová, Igor Chmela, Pavel Liška) is unbeatable.
