If you thought Sydney had reached peak steak, think again. The award-winning team behind stalwarts Rockpool Bar & Grill, Spice Temple, The Cut Bar & Grill and The Collective has added a new carnivorous string to its bow: 24 York – a bold new CBD restaurant with only one main dish on the menu: steak frites. And because this is the Rockpool group we’re talking about, this isn’t a lacklustre cut, but 220g of O’Connor superior grass-fed scotch fillet with a MB2+ – the same one served at Rockpool Melbourne. It comes beautifully grilled, alongside shoestring fries cooked in beef fat – adding another rich, savoury layer and crunch – plus your choice of sauce: peppercorn, chimichurri, umami butter or veal jus. It’ll set you back $48. Mustards are complimentary, and you can add a simple green salad. There’s also a New York cheesecake, and ice cream with chocolate sauce for dessert. That’s it. No massive menu, no eye-watering bill – just a really solid feed.

The name probably gives it away, but this slick new 200-seat grill is located at 24 York Street in Sydney’s CBD. With crisp white tablecloths, comfy leather seats and black glossy tiled columns, it’s a handsome space – and has power lunches and quick, fuss-free dinners written all over it.
Frank Tucker, CEO of Hunter St. Hospitality, says what people seek now – particularly around the YCK Laneways – is certainty, quality and value. “At 24 York, the menu might be minimal, but the experience certainly isn’t. You know exactly what dinner will cost, and you know it will be done exceptionally well. It’s steak cooked properly, in a setting that still feels like a special night out,” he adds.

Just like the food menu, the drinks list is tight too – featuring four local house wines ($12-$13 a glass; $39-$45 a bottle), plus a handful of beers and cocktails. And 24 York’s daily happy hour (4-6pm), with $7 schooners, house spirits and wines, as well as $12 Martinis, Negronis and Old Fashioneds, gives you even more reason to swing by.
