The best bars in Hong Kong to drink rum

The unequivocal best use of sugarcane is starting to find its feet in Hong Kong

Compared to the likes of whisky or sake, rum is still somewhat underappreciated in Hong Kong, but that doesn't mean there isn't a good selection of venues that pay homage to this nectar of the gods. In our opinion, its a wholly underrated spirit, with certain examples offering a complexity of flavours that rivals any single malt. This, and the fact that its such a robust base for a huge number of amazing cocktails means we feel it deserves its day in the sun.

The best bars in Hong Kong to drink rum

Honi Honi Tiki Cocktail Lounge

Bars and pubs Cocktail bars Central

Central’s one and only Polynesian-themed tiki bar has a rum library of some 235 bottles. That includes rare types such as St Nicholas Abbey 15 Year ($240), Doorly’s 12-Year-Old Barbados Rum ($160) and Pyrat Rum 1623 ($480) for those serious about things. Honi Honi's cocktail list is also formidable and formidably committed to the tiki vibe (expect to be drinking from an endless supply of ridiculous receptacles).

Le Boudoir

Bars and pubs Central

While the name hardly screams Caribbean (like, pretty much the opposite), books, covers, and all that should be applied here as once you scratch beneath the French Bistro vibe, you'll find one of the best rum bars in Hong Kong. On top of the 15 rums available on the shelf, its take on the rum old fashioned (with either Pyrat XO or Zacapa 23 Year Old) is a transcendent alcohol experience.

Havana Bar

Bars and pubs Lan Kwai Fong

Ground zero for rum in Hong Kong. This cosy venue’s rum list is broken down by country with choice exports from a (frankly ridiculous) 20 countries to make up a dizzying collection of 60 different kinds of rum. Havana's cocktail menu pays due diligence to the hallowed rum cocktail with a staggering variety of mojitos, daiquiris and other, classic rum-based cocktails all made to a very high standard.

Ohana

Bars and pubs Wan Chai

This Wan Chai tiki bar fully embraces the delightfully cheesy trappings of the genre. And while the garnishes are entirely gimmicky, the folks at Ohana take their drinks very seriously. Specifically, be sure to try the Hula-Hula-Hoop, Ohana's take on a mai tai made with dark rum, pineapple, rose water, homemade pistachio syrup and lime. Also, the Ohana Colada, while also being a great drink, is worth ordering for the carved pineapple parrot alone (pictured).

Quinary

Bars and pubs Cocktail bars Soho

This legendary venue appreciates a good rum and there's few places that treat the spirit with such reverence. Whether it's the spirits used in one of its many rum-based cocktails – especially the game-changing version of a dark 'n stormy – or the selection of 13 different rums (including choice selections like Ron Zacapa 23 Years and Plantation Pineapple O.F.T.D), Quinary is the place to go for the rum-aficionado.
