Last month, we asked 30,000 people around the world to tell us what they thought about their city. We asked them how often they went out, whether they rated their city for food, drink and live music, and how they felt about their neighbourhoods. The result was the Time Out City Life Index, which ranked the best cities in the world. Melbourne came out as number two, which we were pretty rapt about (New York, we're coming for you!).
We also asked people how they felt about individual suburbs, and just as they did last year, survey respondents told us the most overrated suburb in Melbourne was St Kilda. Some 19 per cent of respondents said it was Melbourne's most overrated, and the rest of the southside didn't do well either, with 12 per cent saying the most overrated suburb in Melbourne was South Yarra and 9 per cent saying it was Toorak.
The most underrated suburb, by comparison, was Footscray, with 11 per cent of respondents saying the suburb did not get enough love. This was followed by Yarraville, Brunswick and Collingwood.
But that's not where Melburnians most like to go out and have fun. The suburb people love most is Fitzroy, followed by Melbourne CBD, and the city was the clear winner for people going out, with 59 per cent of respondents saying it was the place to go.
