A Hufflepuff's perfect day in Melbourne

To celebrate the return of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, we've put together a full-day itinerary for Hufflepuffs in Melbourne

You shouldn’t take to heart what Hagrid said about Hufflepuffs being a ‘lot o’ duffers’. Sure, Hufflepuffs are the pacifists of Hogwarts, often struggling to stand up for themselves and are sometimes nice to a fault. But these yellow-and-black-clad Badgers are also extremely loyal, incredibly giving and modest. Plus, Hufflepuffs are the best kind of friends – their common room’s proximity to the Hogwarts kitchens means they absolutely love food. Here’s how to have the most Hufflepuff day in Melbourne.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has reopened in Melbourne – a groundbreaking two-part live theatre show you can see right now at the Princess Theatre. To celebrate, take yourself out on a full-day adventure based on your Hogwarts house: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw.

A Hufflepuff day out in Melbourne

  • Shopping

Kick off your Melbourne adventure by potting around Queen Victoria Market, a wondrous labyrinth filled with fresh produce, knick-knacks and food – oh so much food. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the sheer size of the place (as Hufflepuffs are wont to do) we’d suggest booking into the market’s foodie tours, which run four days a week.

  • Things to do

We know Hufflepuffs are connected with the earth in a way that no other Hogwarts House is. Make Professor Sprout happy and head out on the Aboriginal Heritage Walk of the Royal Botanic Gardens. You’ll journey into the ancestral lands of the Kulin nation and learn how the local people lived within the different gardens, from forest to rainforest and nearby wetlands. You’ll also learn about traditional medicinal uses for various plants – which is Herbology by any other name.

Time for lunch! And you can bet your bottom galleon that Hufflepuffs would enjoy the hummus-laden Israeli street food found at Hardware Lane restaurant Miznon. The vibe is friendly, the food is delicious, and you’ll have to order the whole cauliflower… for Herbology reasons, natch.

  • Kids
  • Abbotsford

Do as the famous magizoologist and Hufflepuff Newt Scamander would do and seek out all kinds of fantastic beasts in Melbourne. At the inner-city Collingwood Children’s Farm in Abbotsford you’ll be able to milk cows, feed chooks, meet ponies and play with baby lambs. Just watch out for the goats – they might not scream as loud as mandrakes, but they come mighty close!

Comfort food is what all Hufflepuffs crave, and there’s no better comfort food than pasta. Tipo 00 is a compact spot tucked away on Little Bourke Street serving up housemade pappardelle with wagyu neck, cannelloni with eggplant, casarecce with pork sausage and even squid ink tagliolini. This is happiness in a bowl. Carb-dodgers be damned.

Retire after the show to the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel on Flinders Street. Your stay starts, as so many fantastic things do, with a cookie. It’s a chocolate-chip puck as big as your hand, spiked with walnuts and cinnamon and served warm. The hotel itself is as cosy as the cookie, so you’ll be able to relax.
