Know your cheddar from your Comté? London's cheesemongers are on hand to guide you through the myriad of cheeses, whether you're a novice or a connoisseur. Time Out picks out the capital's big cheeses

    • La Cave à Fromage

      24-25 Cromwell Place, SW7 2LD (0845 108 8222/www.la-cave.co.uk). New branch: Whiteleys Shopping Centre, W2 4YN.

Despite the French name, La Cave stocks plenty of excellent British cheeses: creamy Welsh Perl Wen or Cerney (a goats’ milk cheese from the Cotswolds) say, as well as sharp Somerset blue cheese. This year, a British Christmas hamper is a highlight, with Bosworth Ash (goats’ cheese dusted with ash) and Celtic Promise included in the mix. A new branch has opened in Whiteleys, and you can place orders online too. Last orders December 20.

  • Cheeseboard

    26 Royal Hill, SE10 8RT (8305 0401/www.cheese-board.co.uk).

This small shop has an extraordinary stock of cheeses, many British. For Christmas, don’t miss the baby Stilton from Colston Bassett Dairy in Nottinghamshire, or the creamy Vacherin Mont d’Or. For the trend-led in your life, you can pick up Alex James’ Little Wallop cheese here, too. Order by December 20 to ensure you get your cheeses in time.

  • La Fromagerie

    2-6 Moxon St, W1U 4EW (7935 0341/www.lafromagerie.co.uk). Branch: 30 Highbury Park, N5 2AA.

This deli-café with cheese room is a must for those seeking unfamiliar varieties from small artisan producers in France and Italy. Rogue River Blue from Oregon in the US is a strong and minerally blue cheese that’s perfect for all those bold red wines and sweet Sauternes come Christmas time. You can’t order online, but popping into the shop is worth it as the staff know their cheeses (and the tipples to pair them with).

  • Jeroboams

    www.jeroboams.co.uk; ten branches across London.

This classy London affineur of French cheeses and purveyor of fine wines is just the place to kill two birds with one stone. Current cheese and wine combos include traditional port (2004 Smith Woodhouse LBV) and Stilton (award-winning Cropwell Bishop), or Milroy’s malt whisky and Scottish cheddar. For online purchases, place your order before December 16; all orders will be ready to collect five days after they’ve been placed.

  • Neal’s Yard Dairy

    17 Shorts Gardens, WC2H 9UP (7240 5700/www.nealsyarddairy.co.uk). Branch: 6 Park St, SE1 9AB (7367 0799).

Order early to get your hands on their famous Stichelton. To avoid the yearly ‘Christmas crush’ at their Covent Garden and Borough Market outposts, order online (by December 20) and collect in-store at the dedicated queue for pick-ups.

  • Paxton & Whitfield

    93 Jermyn St, SW1Y 6JE (7930 0259/www.paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk).

This St James’s cheesemonger has been operating for over two centuries. Along with its repertoire of fine cheeses, there are plenty of British and Continental delights, such as dry-cured York ham or Brie de Meaux. Last orders December 18.
