Niche

Niche

Niche from our previous experiences, was that typical hotel restaurant that served overpriced beef burgers and pork pad kra pao. Thanks to the new executive chef, James Norman, however, the sheer banality of its menu has been given a quirky edge.  The new Niche is all about simplicity. Norman, who previously worked the kitchens at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi and Grand Hotel Kempinski in Geneva, turns out a menu with zero pretension by putting the spotlight on a particular main ingredient. All a diner needs to do is choose whether you want it cooked in an Asian or Western style, and then leave the kitchen to work on some magic.  To our surprise, each dish we were served was a winner. Seared scallops were served with cauliflower purée and couscous for a non-Asian appetizer option (B340), and then fried and coated with crunchy coconut crisps (B340) for those who prefer a more Asian flavor. Recommended for mains are baked snowfish served with douchi black bean sauce, crisps and guava chive salad (B690) and a butter-soft wagyu sirloin spiced with piri piri (B790). We capped off our meal with oversized eclairs, one filled with bittersweet banoffee cream and topped with candied pecans (B250), and another stuffed with Thai milk tea and topped with whipped cream and chewy tapioca pearls (B250).  The bar also follows the same Asian/Western rules. If you’re into gin and want something with Western leanings, ask for the lychee cocktail with elderflower liqueur and fresh lemongrass (B2

Laemgate Infinite

Laemgate Infinite

It has been four years since renowned seafood haven Laemgate landed in Bangkok thanks to the hard work, sweat and tears of second-generation restaurateur Apichat Bowonbuncharuk.  Heavy fashion- and celebrity-related marketing promotions have earned this à la carte buffet restaurant a huge success in recent years. FYI, an à la carte buffet is where you order what you want from the menu instead of picking from sad-looking, ready-made stuff in a buffet spread. And this is where Laemgate’s claim to fame began: all-you-can-eat fare, fresh sea ingredients and affordable prices.  Laemgate has now moved to a new address on Lat Phrao intersection. This new home, designed by rising interior design firm, Studio AOK, takes inspiration from the circus and features a massive carousel hanging from the ceiling. To complement the restaurant’s whimsical and festive interiors, staffers are clad in extravagant dresses influenced by French fashion.  A larger space means Laemgate can now accept up to 250 diners at a time, with four buffet rounds (11:30, 13:30, 17:30 and 19:00; 90minutes/round for B666 net). Its interiors may be fancy but Laemgate’s menu remains simple with 23 seafood dishes, including their best-selling—and our favorite—fresh oysters from Sri Racha, served with chili paste and deep-fried red onions. We’re also into the hot and spicy nam prik khai pu (Thai chilli paste with crab roe), the chewy and tender au suan (Teochew-style oyster omelet), and, last but not least, the crispy

Charm

In an area thoroughly dominated by Bunker and Suppaniga Eating Room, the smart way to put up a new restaurant is to keep things simple. And the guys from Mazzaro, the Italian- Thai fusion place in Charoenkrung, are smart. They’ve opened Charm, a new casual restaurant and bar serving up delightful and reasonably-priced (according to Sathorn standards, that is) Thai dishes. The charming two-story dining room fuses colonial-style furniture (we’re talking dark brown wood and colorful Spanish tiles) with a touch of industrial chic. The food is as pleasing as its interiors—it’s hard to find anything bad about the menu. The deep-fried seabass with sweet-and-sour and spicy herbal sauce (B380) was on point, while the stir-fried glass noodles (B180) with sa-tor (smelly beans), cha-om (acacia leaves) and garlic, three ingredients notorious for their pungent smells, was surprisingly delicious. However, the sous vide pork chop (B340), served with Isaan-style jaew dipping sauce, was slightly below par. The pork was succulent and tender, but they could have done better with the sauce. The dessert options, on one hand, were all impressive. The red velvet cake, filled with cream cheese lava and topped with sugus ice cream (B320), won’t disappoint.  Led by Thananya Samumma, the former bartender at Hyde and Seek, the bar puts a focus on whiskey with extensive Scottish single malt selections and a smooth Monkey Shoulder (a mix of three different single malts). The cocktails, and their Thai nam

Pizza Massilia

Pizza Massilia

Starting as a food truck, this beloved pizza place has upgraded into a proper sit-down restaurant on Soi Ruam Rudee. Pizza Massilia combines Italian flavors with the tastes of southern France and other Mediterranean countries.  Created by Frederic Meyer, the man behind Issaya Siamese Club, and Italian chef Luca Apino of La Bottega di Luca, the new Pizza Massilia differs from other pizzerias with interiors inspired by the love for baroque-style motifs, colorful walls and a shiny parquet floor. The restaurant also has a wood-fire oven imported directly from Naples in Italy. This gigantic monster is responsible for making each pizza’s crust crunchy yet still chewy.  The kitchen is supervised by Chef Flavio Argenio, who is passionate about giving his customers only the best dining experience. The menu is not too large but has everything from starters and classic pizzas to pasta and dessert. Start with the octopus carpaccio (B390). The octopus, imported from Spain, is slow-cooked overnight and served with fresh black pepper, olive oil, fresh lemon dressing and a touch of almonds. Follow it up with the clam spaghetti (B420), made with fresh Hokkaido clams and baked in the wood oven.  The pizza, of course, is the highlight of the menu. There are plenty to choose from, including the best-selling burrata and culatello (B590). Culatello, the best part of the pork leg, is dry-cured, its saltiness going perfectly well with the creamy softness of burrata cheese. Imported tomato sauce a
