I stayed at the best hotel in the best city in the world – and this is what it was like

I experienced Melbourne from new heights thanks to a stay at the Ritz-Carlton Melbourne

Melbourne has just been crowned the best city in the world for 2026 and, after a recent stay at the Ritz-Carlton Melbourne, I can safely say the title is well deserved. From its world-class restaurants to its graffiti-clad laneways, Melbourne has always felt special – but experiencing it from 80 storeys above the city in an opulent hotel regarded as one of Australia’s very best added a new layer of awe.

The design of the Ritz-Carlton Melbourne itself is stunning – but the view of Melbourne from up there is absolutely jaw-dropping. The floor-to-ceiling windows reveal the city, the Dandenong Ranges in the distance, and shimmering Port Phillip Bay. You don't get this vantage point from anywhere else in this city – so this hotel gives you a Melbourne experience that no other can deliver.

Melbourne’s Ritz-Carlton opened its doors in March 2023 and immediately set a new benchmark for luxury. There are 257 rooms across 80 floors, each designed with deep browns, creams and touches of gold that nod to classic luxury.

The automatic blinds in my room rose to unveil views that go for miles. The king-size bed felt like sinking into a cloud. And the marble bathroom had a massive bath with two different tap options and luxe bath salts. There were plush robes, a walk-in wardrobe with a lighted vanity, and every thoughtful amenity you could imagine. But my favourite part of the room was the local art and photography, which really help to give this hotel a sense of place.

The luxury of the Ritz-Carlton Melbourne extends way beyond the rooms. There’s the 20m infinity pool (open 24 hours) with a view of the city. Sun loungers float by the water, giving you the sense that you’re suspended over Melbourne itself. I also loved how the sun came in and turned the room golden.

Even the fitness centre (also open 24 hours) has views worth breaking a sweat for. Big call, but thanks to the sweeping vistas from the treadmill, I’d vote this the best gym in the world. Bonus: I had it to myself every time I went up there (everyone else must have been out enjoying Melbourne!).

The spa and wellness facilities on floor 64 are seriously next level. From hydrotherapy pools and saunas to couple treatment rooms with rose-petal tubs, this is definitely one of Melbourne’s best spas.

The dining and drinking options – all on level 80 – are also phenomenal. Atria is the hotel’s modern-Australian fine diner. The menu changes seasonally, according to the seven seasons of the Kulin Nations’ calendar, not the four of the western one. The fine food is matched by fine views from Port Phillip Bay to Mount Macedon.

For more casual moments, the Lobby Lounge and Cameo Bar serve everything from afternoon tea to cocktails. Of course, if you don’t want to leave the comfort of your room, there is 24-hour room service – I ordered an excellent green chicken curry. And the breakfast on offer at Atria has got to be one of the best ways to start the day in this town. (They even had gluten-free pastry options, which I’ve never seen at any other hotel buffet.)

But what struck me most about this hotel wasn’t the exciting venues, stunning design or unforgettable views – it was the service. From check-in to check-out, every staff member I met was warm, attentive and genuinely invested in making my stay memorable. I felt like I was being welcomed home, and the small touches added up to an experience that felt personal, not scripted. I felt very spoilt.

And what about the location? The hotel’s position on Lonsdale Street makes the best parts of the best city in the world easily accessible. It’s on the western edge of the CBD, a short walk from Southern Cross Station, Docklands, Marvel Stadium and Flagstaff Gardens. The Lonsdale Street/Spencer Street tram stop is just outside the hotel. You’re very close to the popular Higher Ground café, the Lune Lonsdale croissanterie, and within walking distance to the restaurants and bars of Hardware Lane.

Melbourne has always been a city of surprises – from hidden bars to public art – but seeing it from the Ritz-Carlton gave me a new perspective. Paired with the city’s recognition as the world’s best, the experience feels like a perfect marriage of place and luxury.

So yes, Melbourne is officially the best city in the world. And staying at the Ritz-Carlton Melbourne makes you feel like you’ve found its crown jewel. The views, the rooms, the pool, the spa, the food, the service – it all combines for an experience that is equal parts spectacular and relaxing. If you’re planning a city escape or a special celebration, this hotel doesn’t just meet expectations, it elevates them – high above the streets of the city it overlooks.
