The World’s 50 Best Bars were announced today and no surprise for guessing which local establishment fared best. Last year’s most talked about opening, The Old Man continues to earn praise the world over and counts as Hong Kong’s sole entry in the top 50, taking the number 10 spot as well as being the highest ranking new entry on the list.

A total of seven Hong Kong establishments made it into Asia’s 50 Best Bars, but only two other establishments made the leap onto the World’s Best Bars list, garnering spots in the 51-100 category. Quinary (54) and Lobster Bar (62) cracked it, although both fell from their rankings of 40 and 49 respectively last year. Interestingly, though Stockton ranked above Quinary in Asia’s Best this year, it has dropped off the World’s Best roll call after being ranked 69 in 2017. Sadly for the local bar scene, The Pontiac has also not made World’s Best after ranking 68 last year.

A mixed year for Hong Kong bars, then. Fingers crossed that this year’s new openings like Antonio Lai’s new brainchild, Room 309, and others like PDT or Coa do enough to earn spots on next year’s list.

Until then, be sure to check out our guide to the 50 best bars in Hong Kong for what we feel are the crème de la crème of our city’s vibrant bar scene. By Josiah Ng
