Following the rise of #MeToo and Time’s Up – movements that stand up against sexual harassment – female empowerment has rarely felt so topical or important. While there are plenty of seminars and events happening across town, including the likes of #ActiveActivist, International Women’s Day can be just about putting yourself first and letting loose without any judgment. From tackling food challenges to pole dancing classes, here are just a couple of alternative ways to celebrate the day.

Or, prefer to chill out at home with zero expectations? You can always put on a sexy movie or a classic action film starring one of these badass women in martial arts.

Delete Tinder

Delete Tinder

So Valentine’s Day was last month and there’s no shame if you swiped through a dating app to ensure you didn’t spend February 14 alone. But a month has passed and it’s time to move on from the usual swamp of DTF creeps and generally awful Tinder types. You’re a strong independent woman who needs no man.

Escape reality
  • Things to do
  • Tsim Sha Tsui

Feeling down living in a patriarchal society and got the urge to escape reality? That’s what VR games are for. The city has no shortage of VR gaming venues including Glo Station, a ‘hyper-reality’ escape room. Let loose your frustrations on hoards of the undead and shoot them down like the badass you are in real life.

Place a curse on your misogynistic boss

Under the noisy overpass in Causeway Bay sits a group of elderly woman surrounded by the fumes of incense and statues of deities. Known as the Witches of Gooseneck Bridge, patrons come armed with a photo of their enemy – maybe a shitty ex or misogynistic boss – which the ‘witches’ or ‘villain hitters’ attach to a paper effigy and then begin smacking with a shoe while cursing said enemy. Whether you believe in the witches’ powers or not, it’s still a cathartic process. Canal Rd Flyover adjacent to Hennessy Rd.

Binge eat without a care in the world

Binge eat without a care in the world

Screw body shaming. You should be able to binge on all the food you want without having to worry about how you look because of other people’s beauty standards. The easiest – and most fun – way to give the middle finger is to take part in one of these food challenges – spicy wings, tacos, pizza, you name it. Embrace the gluttony and hey, it’s free food if you succeed. What’s there to lose?

Party hard with the girls

Party hard with the girls

International Women’s Day is about more than just celebrating women’s achievements, it’s also about allowing women to let loose, party hard and get completely sloshed without being judged. While only a few of our favourite regular Ladies’ Nights takes place this Thursday, don’t let that stop you from enjoying amazing free-flow deals other days of the week and celebrating International Women’s Day every day of the year.

Take charge in the bedroom

Take charge in the bedroom

Nothing is more empowering than owning your sexuality and taking charge of your sex life. Head to one of the city’s best sex shops and pick up something to treat yourself if your man hasn’t been satisfying you lately. Alternatively, maybe it’s time to take the lead and be the one to give – we’re talking about strap-ons in case we weren’t being clear enough.

Go pole dancing
  • Sport and fitness
  • Causeway Bay

Rid yourself of the stereotype that pole dancing is only for strippers and a tool designed for the male gaze. Pole dancing is not just about looking sexy – because you definitely won’t during your first few classes – but embracing the female body while pushing your stamina and muscles to the absolute limit. Once you got the knack of it, you’ll definitely start feeling sexy, but about yourself and not for others. Grab a friend and try a class at Aerial Arts Academy. Starts from $200.

Kick men off a cliff

Okay, we’re not serious and we’re not advocating any real violence here. We’re simply saying why not go on a hike and head towards a cliff to kick off any metaphorical men who’ve been keeping you down in life. Expunge any negativity and sock it to the patriarchy.

Embrace independence and go your own way
