As we close in on the end of this year, Google Hong Kong's Year in Search 2020 has rounded up different local and international headlines, people, and pop culture that Hongkongers searched for the most this year. In 2020, COVID-19 ranked first as the top trending local headline (no surprises there), while the most Googled keywords in Hong Kong was the US Election, followed closely by online shopping platform HKTVmall, and the Hong Kong Observatory. Aside from the more obvious topics, there were also some interesting keywords and trends that made it to different lists.

With Hong Kong being very much a foodie city, lots of searches were about various recipes and ingredients. This year, drunken duck tongue made it to the top of the list of trending recipes, along with takoyaki, Dalgona coffee, and naan making it on the top 10 of trending recipes, reflecting people’s interest in international cuisine.

Many Hongkongers also looked up the meanings for new slangs, online jargon, and trending phrases, with the word 'staycation' being the most searched for term on Google Hong Kong this year. Other top trending phrases Hongkongers searched for included 'travel bubble', 'BLM' (Black Lives Matter), and 見字飲水 (kin jee yum sui), which translates to 'see this and drink water', a phrase that came from a meme created to remind others to drink water regularly and stay healthy.

It is also clear that Hongkongers are obsessed with TV dramas, as five local drama series: Forensic Heroes IV (法證先鋒IV), Al Cappuccino (反黑路人甲), Airport Strikers (機場特警), The Dripping Sauce (大醬園), and Line Walker 3 (使徒行者3), as well as K-dramas The World of the Married and Crash Landing on You, were among the top of the list. Meanwhile, local cinematic productions Beyond The Dream (幻愛), The Grand Grandmaster (乜代宗師), and I’m Livin’ It (麥路人) all made it to the top trending movies list, along with the Japanese anime movies Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna.
