The resort-like residential town of Discovery Bay has always been filled with laid-back families and their furry friends, but they’re now upping the game even further with pet-friendly bus services. Starting from May 11, pet owners and their companions can hop on DB Pet Buses to and from Discovery Bay. For now, this new service will run during four Sundays – namely May 11, June 8, September 14, and October 12 – bringing visitors to the pet-friendly Sunday markets that are happening on those weekends. There will be two routes servicing several areas in the territories: the PBD1 running from Tseung Kwan O to DB Plaza via Kai Tak, and the PBD2 running from Tuen Mun to DB Plaza via Tsuen Wan West.  A round-trip ticket for one passenger and one pet will cost $68, while a ticket for two passengers with a maximum of two pets will cost $136. Tickets can be purchased on the KMB App1933, which will generate a QR code to be shown when boarding the buses. The official partner for this pet bus, veterinary centre VetiVa, will also be bringing its dog ambassadors Max, Momo, Lesley, and Bosley to join the fun on the bus on May 11. With furry friends in tow, spend relaxing Sundays exploring Discovery Bay’s market and dining out at the town’s range of pet-friendly restaurants. The Sunday market on May 11 in particular will be simultaneously Mother’s Day- and pet-themed, with over 60 vendors selling handmade crafts, unique gifts, pet products, and more. VetiVa will also be there to offer free health screenings and veterinary support for pets, with canine mascots Max, Momo, and Toastie to greet visitors. Lady Gaga might be going to Singapore for her concert, but the queen is making an appearance in Hong Kong in another way: with the much-awaited launch of her own cosmetics brand Haus Labs. For ages, Hongkongers have seen beauty influencers beauty influencers raving about the products on social media but never had a chance to purchase them on our shores, until now. Beauty retail giant Sephora is stocking Haus Labs by Lady Gaga products exclusively in Hong Kong, and the products can now be found in stores at IFC, Windsor House, and K11 Art Mall, as well as online on the Sephora website. Haus Labs is known for its clean, scientifically driven, vegan, and cruelty-free formulas. The full lineup of 125 products include fan favourites such as the Triclone Skin Tech Foundation, the PhD Hybrid Nourishing Lip Oil, and the Color Fuse Blush Powder. In particular, Haus Labs’ bestseller is their foundation which contains over 20 skincare ingredients including fermented arnica, known to reduce redness and inflammation. It’s a medium coverage formula, but apparently feels lightweight and gives a dewy finish that looks like you just naturally have good genes. Hong Kong-American comedian and actor Jimmy O. Yang visited our city for a short trip back in March and got a good deal of attention for his videos on food, experiences, as well as meetings with local stars Dayo Wong and Chow Yun-fat. Fans were in his comments clamouring for a Hong Kong leg on his tour, and O. Yang has now finally confirmed his first stand-up show in our city.  Jimmy O. Yang Live In Hong Kong is going to be particularly special as it marks O. Yang’s first-ever show in Asia – in fact, our city is the only Asian stop on his North America-centric tour as he moves on to London and Amsterdam afterwards. The 37-year-old is set to take the stage at the Hong Kong Coliseum on June 14, and we’re so glad he still feels a strong enough connection to the city of his childhood to perform for us live. Those who follow him on social media will know that O. Yang can speak Cantonese, Shanghainese, and Mandarin Chinese, so we can probably expect some of his material to be in Cantonese specifically for his Hong Kong show. Tickets are priced at $380, $580, and $780, with the first round of sales starting on May 9, 2pm, for HSBC credit card priority bookings only. This will be followed by the Klook pre-sale on May 12 at 12 noon, then sales for the general public will open on May 15 at 10am. The Hong Kong Coliseum only seats 12,500 people and we’re sure the one-night-only show will be in hot demand, so mark your calendars for ticket drops. Hong Kong Airlines continues its goal of elevating its current designation as a local carrier to a full-service global airline – happily, by introducing a range of service enhancements that are sure to upgrade passengers’ travel experience. Coinciding with their recent long-haul routes to Vancouver and Sydney, these upgrades include changes to baggage policy, in-flight dining, lounge facilities, and more. Perhaps the most significant enhancement is Hong Kong Airlines’ new and improved luggage allowance. From May 7 onwards, economy passengers will be allowed to bring one piece of checked baggage starting at 23kg and one piece of cabin luggage weighing seven kg. Meanwhile, business class passengers will be offered a significantly higher allowance and can check in a total of 64kg across two pieces of luggage not exceeding 32kg each, as well as bring two pieces of cabin baggage that do not exceed 15kg in total. As chronic over-packers, we couldn’t be happier saying goodbye to their pesky ‘zero-kg’ clause! Another major upgrade pertains to pet parents, who can now bring their pets into the cabin. This is Hong Kong’s first in-cabin pet travel service that lets passengers fly with their furry companions right beside them. For now, this service is only available on flights to Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, but this is still a significant milestone and definitely a step in the right direction for our city’s travel providers. Business class passengers will be served exclusive seasonal Cantonese dishes, created in collaboration with Michelin-starred restaurant Ming Court. Passengers who choose front-row seats in economy – classed as Economy First – can also enjoy this menu, along with extra legroom and priority boarding. Lastly, the carrier’s upgrades begin on the ground, with significant changes to their Club Autus lounge at the Hong Kong International Airport. A range of local delicacies such as wonton noodles, egg waffles, and chicken noodle soup will be available, as are welcome drinks created by award-winning local bartender Leo Ko, private à la carte dining, and ergonomic massage chairs in special unwinding zones. This upgraded lounge service is available to business class passengers, as well as platinum and gold members of Hong Kong Airlines’ Fortune Wings Club frequent flyer programme. Other eligible travellers including economy fliers in the Enjoyment programme and intercontinental transit passengers can also enjoy the lounge and its perks. Step back in time to Hong Kong in the mid-1980s. This was a time of vigorous development, upward mobility, and a distinctively cosmopolitan city lifestyle that gave rise to our thriving pop culture scene, multicultural politics, and famous entertainment that we were globally renowned for. For many, this was the golden age of Hong Kong culture, and for one night this month, we can return to that glitzy era. Our city’s most iconic nightclub of the 80s, Canton Disco, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a one-night comeback. Back in the day, the Tsim Sha Tsui hotspot was the thumping heart of our nightlife, opening nine times a week for fashionable revelry and regularly welcoming superstars like Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, and Danny Chan, as well as hosting performances and appearances from globally famous artists such as Eartha Kitt, Kylie Minogue, The Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Sylvester Stallone, and more.  Canton Disco’s original space has now become Hermes’ flagship store on Canton Road, but its legacy still lives on – and we are all invited to soak in the nostalgia-filled glamour of our city in the 80s at Trilogy on Saturday, May 17. The club’s original founder and celebrated DJ Andrew Bull aka DJ El Toro will be there to helm the night, and if you were of the generation who frequented Canton Disco, then you might also recognise some of the original DJ team, bartenders, and regular on-stage artists live at this special event. We are also promised some famous celebrities who’ll make an appearance so keep your eyes peeled! The Canton 40 event will be spread across all three floors of Trilogy’s space, with a private bar jam session in Ella, the OG Canton Disco DJ crew spinning in Keyz, and outdoor partying with live tunes on the Wav Rooftop. The Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) presents a new production of Giselle, starring a lineup of world-renowned guest dancers and accompanied by the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong under the baton of Fayçal Karoui. HKB’s artistic director Septime Webre and South African ballet artist Charla Glenn team up to breathe new life into this story of love, betrayal, and redemption, for nine performances only at the end of this month. Some of the famous guest artists for this production include the étoile of the Paris Opera Ballet Hugo Marchand – who was a torch bearer at last year’s Paris Olympic Games – in his Hong Kong debut, while The Royal Ballet’s principal dancer Marianela Nuñez returns to dance with HKB for her third consecutive year. Giselle also marks the return of another principal dancer of The Royal Ballet, Matthew Ball, whom we last saw as Prince Siegfried in last year’s production of Swan Lake. Ball had great chemistry with HKB’s principal dancer Ye Feifei, and we’re excited to see them reunite on stage. Lastly, the international star Victor Caixeta, who was formerly the principal dancer of the Dutch National Ballet will also be returning to collaborate with HKB. Photograph: Courtesy Conrad Dy-Liacco / Hong Kong Ballet For the uninitiated, this ballet follows the kind-hearted peasant girl Giselle who meets and falls in love with the handsome Albrecht, only to discover later that the flirtatious man has lied to her about his background and is also engaged to someone else. The deceit and grief drives her mad and the vengeful spirits of women who died before their weddings try to take revenge on Albrecht for Giselle, but her unwavering love protects him from the supernatural forces. The ballet blanc in the second act, when the wilis spirits rise from their graves is definitely one to keep an eye out for. HKB’s new Giselle will feature beautiful costumes and sets by the designer Jérôme Kaplan, including a castle inspired by the Château de Pierrefond and cottages modeled after Marie Antoinette’s Hameau de la Reine hamlet at Versailles. This tragic, poignant ballet is to be staged on Fridays to Sundays from May 30 to June 8 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Hong Kong’s first professional opera company, Opera Hong Kong (OHK), will present a contemporary rendition of The Magic Flute, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s last opera before his death and a staple in the global operatic repertoire.  Director Shuang Zou has reinterpreted this two-part opera with a modern stage setting, embellished by costumes from renowned designer Dan Potra. The original storyline follows Prince Tamino as he gets sent on a quest by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina, armed with a flute that can transform sorrow into joy.  Opera Hong Kong’s new iteration of the 1791 classic is set in the modern city, and begins in an MTR station – sounds like it will be a quirky, fantastical journey as the characters travel between reality and dreams to achieve their happily ever afters. Mexican-German tenor Andrés Moreno García stars as Prince Tamino, while Pamina will be played by American soprano Sofia Troncoso, and the iconic Queen of the Night by Russian soprano Aigul Khismatullina. We can’t wait to hear her perform the famously challenging ‘Der Hölle Rache’ aria! The production will be a collaboration between Opera Hong Kong, China National Opera House, and the State Opera South Australia, joined by the children’s chorus of OHK, and promises to be a splendid audio-visual feast. After premiering in Hong Kong, the show will then go on to an international tour, so be the first to see it on stage. The Magic Flute will run from May 15 to 18, with the Sunday session as a matinee performance. Earlier this week, the martial arts thriller Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In was confirmed to be one of Hong Kong’s most popular movies as it almost swept the board at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards, taking home nine trophies. While definitely visually stunning and boasting fantastic action sequences, anyone who is familiar with Hong Kong cinema will know that triads, bloody fights, and the themes of loyalty and brotherhood have long been a prominent part of our film culture. Here are some other local movies to watch if you enjoyed Soi Cheang’s post-heroic bloodshed drama. Long Arm of the Law (1984) This may be a pretty old movie, but Johnny Mak’s Long Arm of the Law is a classic that can be seen as an ancestor of the various crime and gangster films that were to follow in Hong Kong cinema. Five men from mainland China cross into Hong Kong hoping to strike riches with a jewellery heist, but nothing goes according to plan as betrayal, car chases, murder, and spectacular violence plague the group. The film’s final 15 minutes are actually filmed in the old Kowloon Walled City, in a famous chase sequence and climatic showdown that shows how indiscriminately violent the police are as well, and remains one of the best finales in Hong Kong cinema. Limbo (2021) Before Twilight burst onto our screens, Soi Cheang had already directed Limbo, also an action thriller but much more dark – literally, as the film is in stark black and white. If you thought the Kowloon Walled City looked bleak, the Hong Kong in Limbo is even more claustrophobic and dank, with the rain cascading down onto both piles of trash and discarded people alike. Violent beatdowns, gang crime, dismemberment, weary cops: this urban noir film has got them all. It’s not an easy watch, but Limbo shows a Hong Kong that is as aesthetic as it is depressing. Chasing the Dragon (2017) This action crime drama by prolific Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Jing is a remake of To Be Number One (1991), and tells the story of the real-life gangster Ng Sik-ho. Donnie Yen plays the illegal immigrant from mainland China who makes his way into 60s-era Hong Kong and transforms himself into the drug lord called Crippled Ho, while Andy Lau reprises his role as police officer Lee Rock from the Lee Rock film series. But things are not that clear cut, as Crippled Ho is portrayed as a half-decent dude, while Lee Rock is a half-corrupt cop, and they both meet halfway in the grey middle while getting revenge.  Paradox (2017) The third film in the Sha Po Lang film series, Wilson Yip’s Paradox has parallels with Twilight as it was Cheang who co-produced it, with Sammo Hung doing the action choreography and Louis Koo starring in the leading role. The neo-noir action flick follows Koo’s police inspector who searches for his missing daughter in Thailand, which leads to the discovery of human trafficking, corrupt officials, awful truths, and plenty of death and destruction. Thai martial artist and actor Tony Jaa also stars as Lee’s detective friend, so you can expect the action sequences to be spectacular. Koo also won multiple Best Actor awards for this film. I’m Livin’ It (2019) While on the surface very different to the dramatic action of Twilight and the other triad movies on this list, Danny Wong’s directorial debut I’m Livin’ It also deals with poverty, the fringes of society, and how a bunch of people down on their luck can band together for survival. Aaron Kwok’s character is a former finance bro incarcerated for embezzlement and has since become a McRefugee – a homeless person who spends the night in 24-hour McDonald’s branches. He meets a group of similarly disadvantaged people, including a teenage runaway, a has-been singer, a street artist, an old man with dementia, and more. Wong takes care not to exploit or fetishise the true circumstances of McRefugees, instead weaving together harsh, humanised, and nuanced stories. We’ve all come across them before – young people with speakers and a guitar, crooning away in Hong Kong’s busiest districts and injecting a distinctly more tender vibe to our city’s usual relentless pace. Some of our buskers are genuinely really good musicians, and Mondrian Hong Kong is supporting these local artists with their Busking Festival. Visit The Corner Shop, an offbeat cultural space right across the hotel, in the evenings across four Saturdays in May to enjoy performances from eight hand-picked musicians. Expect a wide range of music genres from folk and hip hop, to jazz and soft ballads. Each night will feature two artists, who will each perform two-hour sets. Some of these musicians are well-known among Hong Kong’s street performers circuit, have been on reality shows, or are rising producers and singer-songwriters, and all are bound to put on fantastic performances. The Corner Shop Busking Festival will kick off with a party on May 10 where all the performing buskers will be present for a night of music and revelry.
