This popular Islington restaurant has been in the same family since it launched, back in the late '60s. The slightly ritzy plush of Frederick’s entrance cocktail bar, the surprising spaciousness of the dining room beyond, the striking 1980s artwork, the lofty conservatory and pretty hidden garden alongside all come together to convey the idea that a meal here is a bit of a treat. The (mostly) European food menu offers dishes such as crab bisque, ox-cheek raviolo with onion broth and croutons, pan-fried duck breast with celeriac fondant, croquettes and Gascon cabbage, and Welsh lamb cutlets with sautéed potato and garlic French beans. Salt and pepper squid with chilli sauce, and pistachio and herb-crusted tuna with courgette and carrot spaghetti, edamame beans and a mirin dressing are also available. Keep an eye out for seasonal menus and Saturday brunches, too.
Venue says: “A family-run restaurant in Angel established in 1969. Menus from £15.50 (two courses), plus private dining options and weddings.”
