From $1 gyoza to $5 bubbles – dining on a shoestring never looked so good

There's a lot of shitty stuff happening in the world right now, and we're all feeling the pinch ($3.20 for diesel? Jeez). Thankfully, you can still have a night off the dishes and get out and about in Sydney if you know where to look. Many of Sydney's restaurants and bars are offering great deals right now – and I've rounded up a bunch of my faves.

Hell bloody yeah. Get down to Sakura House, the CBD's cool new izakaya from the Waratah team, and order $1 chicken gyoza served with sesame, la-yu and fried garlic. Minimum order five gyoza, but I'd be starting with 10.
This Mexican cocktail bar and restaurant, which moved from its original Paddington location to Surry Hills, is serving icy Margs all night on Thursdays. From 6-8pm, you can also grab $6 tacos at El Primo Sanchez – including cheeseburger with Wagyu mince, mac sauce, roasted onion and pickled cucumber, and lamb barbacoa with salsa de morita and jardín.
Classy CBD hangout The Charles makes an excellent burger, featuring a wagyu beef patty, melted Mimolette and Comté cheeses, onions, pickles, mustard and tomato sauce on a brioche sesame seed bun. From 12-6pm it comes with house wine, beer or soft drink. Hello, work lunch. I'm also a fan of the happy hour, with $2 oysters and $12 vino.
If you're in Parramatta, head to swish rooftop bar Nick & Nora's and lap up the bubbles and views. It's available from 5-6pm, so you may need to knock off work a little early. I don't make the rules.
With every main meal ordered at Gymea's Italian restaurant Fior, from the team behind Jane and Arthur, kids under 12 eat for free. Sunday family lunch, anyone?
Come to popular Surry Hills pub Keg & Brew on Monday for a proper pub classic: golden chicken schnitty with fries or slaw for under $15. Hard to argue with that.
Darlo institution The Lord Roberts is turning 125 this April! To celebrate, they're serving a limited-edition nostalgic menu. Think $10 fairy bread and Bunnings-style sausage tacos, $15 chicken kiev and Gaytime-inspired cocktails.
Potts Point's Penny's Hotel has a fun deal on Wednesdays from 11.30am – $18 nachos and $7 Margs. I'll have two, please.
Cammeray's Italian restaurant Nico has a killer offer on right now. Enjoy a four-course menu for $59. That's great value. Plus, it's BYO Monday to Thursday. Going out mid-week is looking pretty, pretty good.
A fancy offer at one of Potts Point's sexiest date-night spots, Franca, available 5-6pm, is a perfect way to kick off the night in my books.
Look, Bennelong is one of those places that can feel a little out of reach – but the Bennelong Bar is your way in. For $50 you get three snacks and a cocktail in one of the most jaw-dropping rooms in the city, right under the sails of the Opera House. It takes about 45 minutes, making it the perfect pre-theatre bite or a seriously impressive late-night stop. Big venue, without the big bill.
