Timeout New York Kids

Make the most of your city

Dumbo, Brooklyn

During the week, you and your kids lead very different lives. But on this weekend excursion, you’ll finally be in the same boat. On August 15, 22 and 29, from 2 to 6pm, Dumbo’s East River cove in Brooklyn Bridge Park (enter from Main St at Plymouth St) hosts free group trips in rowboats. Experienced instructors captain the skiffs and offer tips on navigating choppy waters. If your crew is in the mood for a real workout, you can also don provided life vests and take out a gratis canoe or kayak (a parent or caregiver must be present).

Back on dry land, trot over to P.S. Bookshop (145A Front St between Pearl and Jay Sts; 718-222-3340). The cozy children’s section abounds with gently used titles priced under $5, which means you can pick up a couple without blowing the budget.

And what’s a playdate without a snack? Forsake the usual Baggie of cheddar goldfish in favor of decadent scoops from new Jacques Torres Ice Cream (62 Water St between Old Dock and Main Sts; 212-414-2462). Three small gourmet cones—in luscious flavors like Vanilla Caramel Popcorn Crunch, Chocolate Chip Cookie and Vanilla Fudge—come to $9.—Julia Israel
