Skaters young and old, mark your calendar: An opening date of December 20 for the LeFrak Center at Prospect Park's Lakeside has been set. We've been excited for the ambitious ice-skating facility's launch since we took an exclusive hard-hat tour of the space way back in July, and now, at last, our wait is coming to an end.

This season, NYC families have been treated to a bevy of new rinks (from McCarren Park to the South Street Seaport). Prospect Park is getting a 32,000-square-foot skating surface with not one but two rinks: One is covered and will transform into a roller rink come summer, while the other is open-air and will morph into a water playground in warmer weather. The LeFrak Center (named for the family that donated $10 million to the $74 million project) also includes an event space, public restrooms, a café and landscaped terraces with views of the rinks.

Entry to the complex is free, whereas skating will cost you $6 during the week and $8 on weekends and holidays (skate rentals $5). Kids 12 and under accompanied by an adult skate for free on nonholiday Mondays 3–6pm. The LeFrak Center will be open Monday–Thursday 11am–6pm, Friday and Saturday 9am–10pm and Sunday 9am–9pm. However, the café's hours will change after the New Year; it will be open daily until January 1, when hours change to Friday and Saturday 11am–10pm and Sunday 11am–8pm (closed Monday–Thursday). Check out Lakeside's website for information on seasonal sports and more.
