When are London’s big musicals and theatre shows returning in 2021?

With the end of the pandemic in sight – if a way off – many of Theatreland’s flagship shows are announcing official return dates

Since every single West End show abruptly closed on Mar 16, 2020 it’s been *technically* possible to book for most of them, but the dates have essentially been placeholders that have been pushed further and further back.

Towards the end of 2020, a smattering of West End shows relaunched in socially distanced productions. However, this was not practical for every show, and because of the third lockdown it now seems questionable as to exactly when they will return.

However, with the vaccines expected to have our lives back to something like normal by Easter many of the big shows are finally gearing up to return ‘properly’, and have given hard reopening dates. There are still unanswered questions about what a theatre show in April 2021 looks like and how it might operate without distancing. But based on current assumptions, you should once again be able to book for your favourite play or musical with reasonable confidence.

‘& Juliet’ – reopens May 28.

‘The Book of Mormon’ – reopens July 12.

Come from Away – was due to return as a socially distanced concert performance from February 10 to 27, although it seems unlikely to go ahead.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie – reopened already, but performances suspended.

Hamilton – reopens May 15.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – reopens ‘before summer’, dates tbc.

Les Misérables – reopens May 29.

Leopoldstadt – reopens for a limited season, June 12 to September 4.

The Lion King – reopens ‘spring 2021’, dates tbc.

Magic Mike Live – reopens April 16.

Mamma Mia! – reopens June 7.

Mamma Mia! The Party – reopens October 1.

Mary Poppins – reopens May 22.

The Phantom of the Opera – reopens June 5.

The Play That Goes Wrong – reopened already, but performances suspended.

Six – reopened already, but performances suspended.

Tina – The Tina Turner Musical – reopens June tbc.

‘Witness for the Prosecution’ – reopens May 18.

‘Dear Evan Hansen’, ‘The Mousetrap’, ‘Pretty Woman’, ‘Prince of Egypt’, ‘Wicked’ and ‘The Woman in Black’ have all indicated they will be returning, but there is no further information at present.

‘The Comedy About a Bank Robbery’, ‘Thriller Live’ and ‘Waitress’ were due to end their runs in 2020 anyway, and have now closed permanently.
