Following the success of ‘Man v Food’, eating challenges are everywhere in London. But just how feasible is it to eat a calzone the size of a toddler? Can chicken wings that require the eater to sign a waiver be anything other than a bad idea? And can any good possibly come of consuming a sausage roll the size of an elephant’s trunk? Time Out takes on London’s hardest food challenges and test the limits of the human stomach so you don’t have to.

Forget leathery sausages on soggy buns - find the best hot dogs in town Big Apple Hot Dogs The ‘cool’ dog, from a street food cart – and complete with cult following. Great bun-to-sausage ratio. Our squidgy bun was dwarfed by a whopping NY style sausage: a pork dog with a springy middle and delicately smokey casing. Dirty Bones This ‘dive and dog bar’ – hot dogs, that is – is housed in a highly styled retro cool Kensington basement. The hostess table is a vintage pinball machine, the lighting is flatteringly set to drinking-den low, and the music is at ‘party loud’. Expect impeccable hot dogs in pillowy buns and all manner of other pimped dude-food. Hackney Picturehouse Bar & Kitchen Okay, not a ‘destination dog’, but still the best cinema sanger in town. Our finger bun had a non-speaking part: the star was the sausage. Dense yet bouncy, it was beautifully seasoned, with just the right level of spice kick. Hawksmoor Spitalfields (bar) The top dog, without doubt. Deliciously juicy, our top-notch sausage was distinctly smokey and had a huge, ahem, girth. Served in a buttery brioche bun, the standard dog would provide satisfaction aplenty, but the chilli cheese upgrade (add £1.50) rocked our world.
